New tools give HoundDog users greater scope for monitoring and reporting

HoundDog Technology showcased the latest additions to its Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) toolset to over 800 Microsoft Small Business Partners at the SMB Nation Fall Conference in Seattle, Washington, USA from October 4 – 6, 2008.

HoundDog has recently added a number of features including File Size Monitoring, Roll-Your-Own Event Log Checking, WSUS Patch Monitoring, Bandwidth and Server Performance History reporting, and support for various backup products including Symantec Backup Exec v12 and BrightStor ArcServe v12.

Chief Executive Doug Wilson said the added functionality gives HoundDog users greater flexibility and scope for monitoring and reporting.

“Essentially we’ve opened up the product to give IT support companies greater flexibility to monitor more applications and devices, and to tailor HoundDog to their clients’ exact needs.”

“When HoundDog was launched back in 2005 it was with a very simple toolset that delivered the essential checks and was easy to get going. It’s been really well received by our customers and whilst we still stand by providing the key features and our ‘set-up in ten minutes’ ethos, we’ve added these new tools to give them greater scope for monitoring and reporting,” he added.

HoundDog’s File Size Check allows support companies to monitor user areas, departmental shares, MS SQL Server database, and bespoke application log files and get alerted when they exceed or fall below a specific size. With the Roll-Your-Own Event Log Check (RYOELC) Event Logs can be queried to get alerted to events from Windows systems and bespoke applications.

HoundDog has also integrated with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Microsoft’s free patch management tool to offer patch reporting. The WSUS Check queries the WSUS database and provides critical information about patching status so that support providers are aware that a problem exists. Using that data, they’re able to better use their time to take action and keep clients safe.

“Many of our users make use of Microsoft’s WSUS patch management application because it is free and easy. Our WSUS Check helps them use WSUS more efficiently by automating the process of viewing the status of updates from one single interface, the online DashBoard. Knowing the exact WSUS status gives the IT support company peace of mind that security and performance of their customers’ systems is optimised,” Wilson said.

The addition of Bandwidth and Performance History Reports provides a meaningful way of analysing server performance and bandwidth to spot recurring trends and drill down into problems. The report can be configured for all HoundDog’s Server Performance Checks (processor queue, processor utilisation, memory utilisation, network utilisation and physical disk) and Bandwidth Monitoring over a 24 hour or 8 day period.

Wilson said the new HoundDog features have been well received by customers. “HoundDog users are adding these new tools and reports to expand their monitoring capabilities and deliver better service, and it’s still only taking them ten minutes to get going.”

The lesser known of the RMM vendors, HoundDog is a quiet achiever, having celebrated its fifth birthday, expanded in five countries across Benelux and Scandinavia, doubled revenues and grown its customer base from 850 to 1,500 all in the first six months of 2008.
